CLIWOC Partner 4

Instituto de Ciencias Humanas, Sociales y Ambientales

The group comprises the Environmental History Unit of the INCIHUSA (Instituto de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales, based in Mendoza, Argentina). It is composed of historians and geographers. Its main experience, over more that fifteen years, lies on the study of climatic variations based on temperature and precipitation reconstructions. Most of the research has been centred on the reconstruction of South American climate since the Colonial times. Their work extends from Argentina to the Andes region and Bolivia, as well as the South Atlantic. The principal sources are Spanish Archives (Archivo General de Indias in Seville) and local South American archives. They pioneered the climatological exploitation of the AGI records.

The group also has teaching responsibilities at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza where environmental history, environment and culture in Prehispanic America are their main topics.

The group has received funding from the Argentinean Government, Spanish Government, several universities, the EU Research Programme International Co-operation with Developing Countries (CLIWARDA project), FONCYT and US National Science Foundation, among others. Currently they are involved in three projects on environmental history.

Different partnerships have been established for co-operative projects, of which dendrochronology groups from CONYCET, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad de Seville, CDC/NOAA and NCAR are the most relevant.
